In the Bible, it is stated in the Book of Genesis that there exists the Garden of Eden, which has the duality of the Trees serving different purposes: the Tree of Life, and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. God does not give the prohibition for the Tree of Life, and it's free to be consumed...so why not take this idea, and turn it into an original work? And that's what you get with mangaka Kagiri Araido's Twitter/Pixiv web manga series: Jiisan Baasan Wakagaeru a.k.a ... Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again, a rom-com series about elderly people's regression when they eat from the supposed "Tree of Life", and live life to the fullest, as portrayed in their young adult days.

They say, "Second Chances are hard to come by", and this context is given to the main elderly couple of the Saitos: husband Shouzou and wife Ine. After building their apple orchard for much of their lifetime and noticing that one particular tree has grown a golden apple, they don't think much of it and consume it just like any other normal apple, only to find themselves regressing in age. Manifesting romance back in their lively days, and serving as the comedy gag, both Shouzou and Ine begin to re-experience the days of their youth once again, inspiring the people around them and taking the jab of professing how great it is to be young again.

The one-word-liners to describe this show, would be heartwarming, surprising, wholesome, and uplifting, because that's the motive of the original source material to weave daily moments into life that can be enjoyed once again. That being said, Shouzou and Ine's direct influence being their son of Yoshiaki, his wife of Kaede, and their child-cum-granddaughter Mino, it's just relentless comedy gags aimed at the young to ever be so surprised that their parents/grandparents, with all of their infinite wisdom and adding their regression, makes for lots of hijinks that even affect their neighbours and especially the grandchildren, forming their own rom-com circles that you can't help but chuckle at (even if the jokes may be hit and miss). The fact is that while this show doesn't have a plot around it, it uses its setting to good effect, and ultimately comes up as a decent-to-good show that you can watch in your free time. And for that, the show does its sole job well.

Like everything else in the anime, you can take it or leave it as it is. The production by studio Gekkou is rather decent (with a few eye-popping comedy moments), as well as the OST alongside Koresawa's OP and Shouzou and Ine's ED, both of which I feel are just mind-numblingly slow (given that this is a show that has "young" in the name) and giving them the speedbump up would've helped things be livelier.

It's a chill anime that definitely screams the one-off episodic treatment, but if this show is your jam, then feel free to just rest in the laurels of the feel-good show that's just a comfort to watch.

Even today I still hear people say that anime are just cartoons for children. With the end of Jiisan Baasan Wakagaeru I reaffirm that anime is only a medium to tell stories of all kinds, in this case it was a quite emotional one.

The stories of the grandparents who rejuvenate at first seem like they would put the grandparents in all kinds of scenarios to tell a joke. Although due to the sketch format some segments were like that, throughout the 11 chapters they also talked about serious, sad, romantic and family things. The grandparents only needed 5 minutes on screen to let us know, ... without ever mentioning it, that they love each other and have great chemistry. Without exaggeration, we may be facing one of the best, if not the best, couple of the season.

The anime uses an hourglass to explain and handle the entire phenomenon of rejuvenation. One thinks that it will only be a visual aid for the viewer but they really make the most of this narrative element. Seeing how the clock can be turned over, broken, erased and the consequences that this has on the grandparents is something quite interesting to see. On the other hand, a lot is also played with grandparents, playing with the theme of aging and rejuvenating at will, but no matter what version of them they show us, love will remain unchanged.

This anime has a speech about the age of time that makes you feel very nostalgic no matter how old you are. Seeing how some things are forgotten, no longer used, towns that naturally become ghosts or businesses closing due to lack of customers, are issues that you don't see so far away. If you live in a small city or a village you may even be able to understand more closely everything that is talked about here. Rejuvenating grandparents make you understand two very important things:
1.- Time es for everyone and there is nothing we can do to stop it.
2.-Due to the above, we must enjoy our loved ones as much as possible. You never know when it will be the last time we see them.

As you can see I gave this anime a 10, it's just that it's a tricky 10. This anime may seem like the best, the worst, or average to you, depending on how much you can connect emotionally with the grandparents. In my case, this anime came at a point in my life where the topic of grandparents hits very sensitive chords. That's why more than a 10 for its quality, it's a 10 for how it made me feel. In this way, it is not something that I could recommend indiscriminately because what I liked was too personal.

The basic plot is that an old married couple discovers a fruit from the first tree they planted, which grants them youth and allows them to live young again. What will they do now that they are young, and how will others react?

The art is standard; the main characters look okay in their youth, retaining their grey hair but being young beyond that.

The characters are more or less one-dimensional, with no signs of a need to develop them.

The episodes are similar to one-off episodes, so you can watch any episode consecutively without needing to watch it.

It was not something I found ... a strong interest in, the plot is good, but when everyone seems to fawn over them including the daughters like the grandpa for being attractive, it was a little odd.

If you are looking for a chill anime without any real need to dive deep this might be your cup of tea, for me, it did not catch my interest enough to continue.

This anime revolves around two grandparents, Shouzou and Ine Saitou, as they turn young again. Before this show aired, I read the synopsis for this series and was immediately intrigued because the possibilities that you could do with a story like this is seemingly endless, and on top of that, the concept of giving grandparents the opportunity to do new things that they never could’ve done when they were younger is very wholesome by itself. When this show actually started airing, I was immediately sold on the cute and comedic dynamics that this show presents due to both Shouzou and Ine turning young again. On ... top of the whimsical nature of everyone else’s reactions to two grandparents being basically young supermodels, the main couple finally gets to experience new things that they never could have experienced during their prime days, which makes the overall perspective that this series presents hit hard. I really like the themes of taking in the simple moments in life and holding your loved ones close, and although this is a very unoriginal message in storytelling, Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again’s narratives deliver on those themes well through fun and heartwarming characterizations. If I were to offer any form of criticism for this anime, I will say that some of the editing isn’t that great (which seems to be a running theme for this seasonal slate of anime), more specifically the audio mixing. Sometimes the backing soundtrack in this series just overpowers some of the seiyuu’s performances, which makes it difficult to hear some character voice lines. I can’t imagine watching this anime in raw Japanese because without the subtitles, it’d be near impossible to hear what some of the characters are saying, especially when it comes to Mamiko Noto’s voice lines for Ine. Another aspect that I have to point out is that this show can be kind of repetitive sometimes. I don’t mind some sense of repetition in more laid back movies and shows like this, especially if the writing is mainly revolving around fleshing out the characters’ lives and their relationships. However, Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again occasionally reuses some of the same comedic tropes and plot points, which makes viewing this show a bit boring at times. Regardless, these minor setbacks don’t hold back the overall cute atmosphere that this show brings, and, for the most part, accomplishes in being nothing but straight wholesomeness. If you need a short and relaxing anime to watch, give Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again a try.

This show is a little hard to review in some ways but, yeah, this one deserves all the praise it's been given, maybe more even. For those who don't wanna read a whole long review and are good with a general idea or overview, you'll certainly like it if you enjoy more slow paced, comedy, slice of life, or relaxing type anime, e,g Aharen-san wa Hakarenai type of show. Now then onto the review.


What is this? And also what isn't it? Grandma and Grandpa turn young again, or Jiisan Baasan Wakagaeru, is a show that seems on the surface to be a simple old couple ... living out their lives turned young again. And while that's certainly true this show offers quite a bit more than just that. The main thing you'll probably find most commonly is moments of comedy, and while it certainly can be hit or miss, it doesn't detract from the watch in any way if you don't laugh at it or find it funny. Because there's also more general life content of not just the lives of the old turned young, but also their grandchildren and children. And it's through these interactions and talk between family that really sets this show apart. From ing old memories, to helping family through their struggles in life, to even just simple fun games and stuff in their own community. It's offers a quite realistic take on family and people living in a small city community that ends up giving the show a more relaxed and calm tone. But with the masterful blending of semi realistic slice of life writing, comedy, and even the more serious emotional moments. Jiisan Baasan Wakagaeru, is a show that doesn't provide a large and super interesting plot or too much of one at all, but it makes up for that by using it's characters to provide it's own form story through their lives.


The production is solid but nothing special, the art and animation is largely simple but more than effective for what it's trying to achieve. The music is fairly nice and gets the job done well, voice acting is all good and more than up to standard. Overall it's got solid production quality that won't impress you too much but more than gets the job done well.


Ending thoughts, I'm going to end with recommending this since a show that has some nice qualities and does almost nothing badly can't really be a bad watch anyways. The main catch being not having much of a plot or story, which isn't really a bad thing as it would kinda ruin the point of the show anyways. It does what it set out to do and it does it very well plus some extra. Overall I would highly recommend this to anyone if they're one who can appreciate the slower, more relaxed and character focused content/story. Otherwise if you aren't a slice of life comedy fan or prefer more plot focused anime. Go watch Naruto, Blue Exorcist, FMA, Black Butler or other similarly well liked tried and true shounen from the past 10-15 years if you haven't already, you'll probably enjoy it far more than this.

Possibly the best wholesome anime I have watched in a while...gotta say it's definitely not boring and damn the characters are adorable and have a good story behind them...this genre is kinda rare but it was a good adaptation of such genre I hope we get some animes like this in future...but I am greedy I know this anime is supposed to be a single season anime but damn I hope for a new season the animation is good surprisingly! Also the story in each episode is kinda unique I would actually love to have a special season where they have each episode dedicated to ... all major characters in the anime and their back stories

There are pros and cons, but I Give 10/10 For the original and very healthy story. I would give Oscar to this.

Spoiler-free review with all pros and cons: This anime is the true definition of Love. There is not much romance, but it shows what true love should be like. I feel jealous of them as all the characters in the anime. Because Today people lack the concept of true love, and as said the main pro is the Concept of love, "will always love till death does you apart". It's So touching, it's so cute, it leaves you with positive and fuzzy feelings ... inside you.

Con: Lacks romance, I understand they are old, but needs more romance. But I guess when you're from previous era and generation there was not much time and opportunities for more romance, so definition of romance was different during that period.

Everyone will enjoy this anime who loves the concept of love.

TLDR: Pleasantly moving.

The whole story is right in the title. If you jump in expecting much more, your expectations will be dashed. It does explorer the mystical aspects but is far from the main story. The focus is of course the elderly couple and their newfound energy but more importantly, good looks. Strangely it doesn't change their personality as various scenarios play out with their children, grandchildren, neighbours, appearance and memories. There wasn't much to explore and so the creators did the right thing. Keeping the series 11 episodes long and wrapping up things just as a repetitive vibe was kicking in was the best ... course of action. Although you are left wanting more of this wholesomeness. The series somber ending leaves you with a sense of melancholy. This is not the show for the typical anime fan, but it is well worth the watch for a slightly more mature audience

The art is acceptable as nothing groundbreaking was needed for this content. Voices were well done and is exactly what I envisioned. The pacing was a tad too fast or slow in some areas but isn't a deal breaker by any means.

This series needs more attention. It's simply beautiful, and has one of the best endings I have seen in over 50 years. In an industry that regularly fudges endings horribly, this one was about perfect for me; a very welcome change of pace.

The series itself is a fantasy/slice of life, that is laid back and focuses mainly on the mundane aspects of being a family. The unclean isekai/shonen/mecha masses need not apply here. The writing was sweet situational comedy, not so much gag driven, although there are some good gag sequences. The character designs were very believable for me. All four generations of this ... family, and their friends, are loveable and treated with respect by the writers.

Let's address the elephant in the room, though. I've seen lots of comments insinuating incest once grandpa turns young, and turns out to be a hunk. When I saw those scenes, I saw nothing of the sort. My impression was the daughter-in-law and granddaughter were teasing grandpa, trying to embarass the hell out of him, which they accomplished. Anyway, those were only one short minor scene in each of the first two eps, and then that goes away. The word 'wholesome' actually applies for this series, and is not just a throw-around adjective. Please leave your own kinks at the door.

OK, the artwork isn't super special, but it has a soft, comforting quality that fits the vibe the producers are trying to convey. The animation is not going to knock your socks off, and frankly it doesn't have to, as this is a character driven series. What does have to muster is the voice acting, and this cast knocks it out of the park, all the characters are so well portrayed, even minor ones. Huge kudos to not only the cast, but to the direction who kept this right on track.

If I was grading, this series earns a 94/100 for a solid A. It's not perfect. But it does so many things well, that I can't help but recommend it to someone that is looking for something soothing to their soul.

I loved the story, it was simple and straightforward, an old couple suddenly become young again, and the surprise that comes along with it (quite lower than it would be in reality). There's the lovely joke of them still acting like an old couple despite being young again, and all the simple yet romantic shared moments between them that can only be achieved after a lifetime together.

I loved this anime, but it's not for those who dislike slow paced, simple stories with a simple argument.


Now, to answer the questions it offers when saying my review needs more information:

Is the story unique?
Yes and no. Yes ... because I have never before seen a romance/slice of life with this argument, but at the same time no because it doesn't have any kind of ground-breaking artwork or a completely unexpected never before seen romantic scenes or anything of the sort.

Do you think the art style is fitting for the story?
Yes, it isn't extremely elaborate or extremely simplistic either, in my opinion goes perfectly well with the story.

Were the characters well-rounded? Did they have flaws and strengths, or were they unusually strong/smart/stupid?
They were all decently well-rounded. Besides the 2 main characters who were supposed to be the main focus there isn't too much development of the side characters, except for a few, which seems adecuate for me. They had both flaws and strengths, just like real people, with the 2 MCs showing the greatest strengths of being better than others in of strength, wisdom, etc, but I'm guessing that was the point, trying to show that the 2 elderly wise people who had gone through a lifetime of experiences would be better than others if they suddenly became young and strong all of a sudden.

Did the characters react to situations and events in a realistic way?
In my opinion, they did for some things, and didn't for others. They did in the aspect that some people are just so used to a certain lifestyle that if they suddenly went through a sudden improvement in physique, their lives wouldn't change all that much overall. They didn't in the aspect that if some old people suddenly became young out of nowhere, it would become news, and there certainly would be companies and governments trying to find out the way to become young once again.

Do you think others will enjoy/dislike this series, even if you didn't? Why?
I think there will be those who will enjoy this story just as much as I did, and maybe more, and at the same time, I think there will be those who don't like it at all. It has positive aspects that can also be considered negative ones depending on who is analysing the anime, such as the shortness of the story, it only has 11 episodes, which seemed perfect for me, since there wasn't anything more to add to the story unless the writers wanted to go off the rails. There's also the slow paced story, I personally loved it, and from now on this will be one of my soul-healing animes for whenever I'm stressed and just want to relax, but I'm sure there are many people who will hate this.

Jiisan Baasan wakagaeru is an anime about a couple of japanese elderly that one day turn 20 years old again.

Before everything, i must warn, if you don´t like the anime ... try other time, when you get older. It is really difficult to understand some parts of the anime if you are less than 30 years old. You really must be a older person to understand a lot of things ...

History wise you already know the end of the anime in the first eps ... and the end really don´t matter. What really matter is how sometimes love comes in different forms ... and sizes, and oh boy, love is the main part of this anime. How to love, how to start a love and how love gets thru the years. It´s a real lesson of life.

Now about the anime :

History 10 - it´s pretty simple, but really warm history. It´s really original, funny and you really care a lot for everybody. Sometimes simplicity is a gift.

Characters 9 - The cast is really small, but ow boy, is really easy to fall in love for anyone in there. Plus points to every couple in the anime.

Music 7 - the music is there ... it makes you fell really happy.

Art 9 - it´s a anime about elderly ppl ... don´t espect to fight against gods, explosions and etc ... Art is beatyfull, constant and nice.

I don´t know if 9 is a good grade for this one ... It isn´t epic, but is something hearwarming that i gonna keep in my heart for the rest of my life, and btw ppl ... don´t forget your grandparents ..

This anime taught me a lot. If we are going straight plot story line, this anime isn’t for everyone. Typically people want an anime with consecutive story. But this anime feels like a 4 manga in a way which some episodes that continue.
I think the theme of this was how old age doesn’t affect love. Sure there wasn’t any kissing scenes but it shows that even if they are old, young, how they look, they still love each other from the beginning even without as much physical .

The ending scene was honestly good and I was happy it ended. I was sad but ... happy. The hourglass scenario kinda made sense to me and shows how much we have to appreciate the time we have with other people.
The relationships grow even though they were fast paced clips. Again, it’s light hearted romance and people wanted more “action” but I think it’s plenty. This was more of a wholesome anime than a drama one. There was some comedic moments that I enjoyed a bit :)

Overall I would score this a 10/10. It taught me to cherish time with loved ones like it’s a usual day in life. To help others even when they don’t ask. That’s the message I got from this anime. Anyway that’s my take on it, agree/disagree it’s okay people have opinions and this one is mine lol

I just finished watching this anime and to sum it up, it has interesting beginning, adequate middle, and great ending.

Before I start reviewing, there's a criteria I exclude. I have seen the manga, but stopped halfway knowing it was getting an anime adaptation. The first impression I had was its lack of good animation. The animation feels low-budgeted and was stuck to the manga style. I personally don't mind this, but if you're the type that likes good animation, this ain't it. In other words, I'm not rating the animation.

Story
Extremely wholesome SoL (for a supernatural tag) and I gotta love how they depicit family ... relationships. It is semi-episodic but if you're in need of iyashikei, this would be a good choice for this saturated action season.

Story progression is both slow and fast in some parts, but overall doesn't feel rushed. It also builds on the world building instead of just focusing on the main characters. Overall, I really liked the ambiance, feel-good, touching moments this anime gave. 9/10

Characters
I won't say they're all good. Some characters do felt underdeveloped (such as the grandsons) but it's nice to see they all had screentime and some importance to the story and to build the story environment. 7/10

Ending
I can't stress this enough, but having an ending for this anime really took it to greater heights. Rather than having just no ending by most SoL, this one actually made a banger of one. This anime, this gimmick, it's all too interesting yet becomes boring. I've seen so many good beginnings having unmemorable endings. I think this anime did a spectacular decision to make use of an ending, not prolonging the story until it's boring. It made me sad it had to end, but that's memorable and it teaches a very important lesson to the viewers. There's beauty in ending, but this anime also ends in beauty. 10/10

Hope you can give it a shot if you're heartache, broken, feel bored of shounen, or just don't have and romcom to watch.

In a world where relationships come and go (and that's okay). Where love is not usually long, (and that's okay). And perhaps there is family dysfunctionality. This beautiful anime comes to show us the happiness of being alive, love, family union and enjoy the present through a fantastic complement, which gives a great lesson in real life. A Slice Of Life story that will make you think: Will a fruit that returns two old people to be young be funny or meaningful? Short answer: YES, SUPER YES.

You can't miss this little story of grandparents, about their life full of ups and downs like everyone ... else, they are not special, they just go through life the best way they can, WITH LOVE, UNION, COMMITMENT. They also help their children and grandchildren with the voice of experience and help them to get ahead and not give up. If you have grandparents, love them, live with them, they are gone, or you are one of them, this wholesome anime will purify your soul, SUPER RECOMMENDED.

Decent animation for a SLICE OF LIFE, plus a storyline with specific stories to endear you to the grandparents, children and grandchildren, even the neighbors LOL.
It had the participation of its original author for the end of the anime, AT THE SAME TIME as the end of her manga. That doesn't happen often. And while yes, they skipped many stories in the manga that give more bonding or character development, it doesn't affect the plot and they chose the right stories so that the final chapter will strike a great arrow of love in your heart.

My opinion: It is not a perfect work and of course it has its clichés and maybe you are not a fan of animation or tropes, BUT I consider that it has an excellent ending that leaves most people satisfied. So my rating may not be so objective because it was very personal, but I'm sure you will like it.

You'll never guess what this show is about! I really love that this show didn't do the old trope of "Oh no, something magical happened! Gotta keep it a secret so that we can maintain normalcy and blend into society!" Nah, instead grandma and grandpa are like "Heck ya! This is awesome! Let's go party!" It's a blend of them making up for what they weren't able to do during their youth, while also just going about their daily business but with more energy than they had before. It was so incredibly cute and wholesome with a lot of beautiful emotional bits that stem from ... the other family and their reactions to the situation the grandparents are in. It's SUPER short, but it honestly got everything done that it needed to and ended it when the time was right, which I always appreciate. Please give this show a watch if you need some warm fuzzies, followed by a good cry.

Recently there is a beautiful trend of animes exploring the intricacies of relationships...but not in the superficial and usual way of your romcoms.

These shows actually portray people getting together, the sacrificies that must be done in order to generate a healthy and lenghty relationship and all the obstacles of raising a family through the years.

This is a show about this...and how even though time takes a toll on our mortal bodies...when the feelings are true enough...love survives everything.

Above all it's a show that reminds us that we need to care for those around us and value them while they are still around.

Definitely a cute ... one to invite your relatives to watch!

Well written. This show really shows that a LOT of things could happen when you are basically given a second chance at life. Its a heart warming story and a comedic one at that.

Everyday being a new turn of events one right after another, where we get to learn more and more about the characters backstory which is quite intriguing because they each have their own predicaments and they just need a "spark" to help them solve their own troubles.

It just goes to show that people regardless of their age will need help eventually even though, people tend to believe a stigma that ... once you get older the only person that could help yourself is you. But in reality there might be more people that wouldn't mind helping you at all. All these subtle points are depicted well in its animations!!

It has clearly depicted the fear of losing someone dear to you and how desperate it would make you feel. On the other hand, it yet also clearly shows the guilt that soon follows if you left that someone alone. For me, its a bitter sweet feeling that has been left from this anime but personally I am satisfied with where the plot goes. Its perfect.





ps. I COPED SO HARD WISHING FOR A SEASON 2, they are too cute together!! agh

It starts off delivering precisely what I expected to see in of simple presentation and comedy. The joke of 'old people becoming young again but still acting like old people' can only carry for so long and the cheap-looking visuals (especially in the opening and ending animations) alongside the heavily-recycled facial reaction I got sick of seeing didn't help, either. Nitpicky stuff, for sure, but I likely would have stopped watching after the first week of it's airing had there been anything better to do with my time on the Sundays that followed. Good thing I'm a, uh, boring person, I guess? Aside from ... the bland humor and the weird need to periodically remind viewers of just how attractive grandma and grandpa have become in their returned youth, there's a few other recurring themes I picked up on that likely would have gone unnoticed had I watched this as a child... up until they hit my naïve little soul like a moving truck at the end of the season, that is. It's cute, wholesome, and kind of dumb much of the time, but it most certainly isn't as superficial as I thought it would be.

I genuinely wish to recommend this to everyone but the initial commitment makes it a tough sell. I'm not the type to convince a person to watch something with the promise that it will "get good later on" and I fully it that what I've dealt with this year may have made me more susceptible to what JBW delivers. Not a 'must watch' in my opinion though not a regrettable one, either, if you choose to stick it out until the end.

Jiisan baasan wakagaeru is pretty much self explanatory from the title as to what it has to offer, it's the story of a old couple who turn young and the story proceeds from there covering how they spend their remaining life and how it leads to intresting developments.

Though the narration uses a very unnatural plot device mixed in with lack of realism and low level animation, which may not to be everyone's liking, the true charm of the show lies elsewhere.

The show really highlights the differences between generations, how time changes a person's perspective of their life, like how to a parent their child will ... always be their precious child no matter much they've grown, how to live a happy life and similar nuances.
