Why Manga Can Become Classic Literature

In fact, the only thing that is certain about defining literature is that the definition will change.

Manga did not exist back in William Shakespeare's time and to keep using that period's definition and criteria for judgement for the current era's works is wrong.
Manga can be considered literature.

Now what makes classic literature classic literature?

Influence - they are well known, influence generations of writers and inspire discussion whether good or bad.

"But manga is unoriginal and copies from other works"
Even Shakespeare has taken inspiration and has been influenced by other works and things, to say that only manga is like that is ignorant and bias.

Literary merit -

Literary merit is the quality shared by all works of fiction that are considered to have aesthetic value.
The concept of "literary merit" has been criticized as being necessarily subjective, since personal taste determines aesthetic value, and has been derided as a "relic of a scholarly elite".

That means any work can have literary merit so it comes back to influence as the defining criteria for classic literature.

Standing The Test Of Time - of course "classic" means even after many generation the work is still read and discussed.
This is a key point of differentiating from a currently popular series that is forgotten to a classic one which remains.

The same can be said for any work and that is why literary merit is irrelevant.
It it also the norm in today's society to hate and bash any and every work that is popular and that is well recognized, which makes judging a work by a subjective matter a complete farce.
