It really is as you say: she knows how to do everything, isn't fazed by anything, she intimidates everyone. She's OP in every aspect and it wouldn't be a problem if she wasn't OP in such an unfun way.
OPM -> despite OP he cares about the simple things, + the show's hilarious has amazing animation, has some interesting side characters,
Overlord -> OP but relatable: he acts being a king even though he's just winging it and writes notes and practices lines, he's struggling to keep all his NPCs happy and barely by luck and in hilarious turn of events manages to meet all their expectations.
When the MC is really capable there are ways in which you can still make their journey interesting be it through the production value (animation, art, soundtrack, voice acting), comedy, other characters or through making the character human and lacking in other aspects. This anime is just super bland.
I have to say, it's pretty funny reading how mad people in your comments are. I haven't read other reviews from you but this one seemed sincere and funny.
["So, on one hand, I can't form an opinion on how Simon's grief was portrayed (because I've never experienced it, you'd know that), but it also wasn't supposed to be "some deep think piece" portrayal of "grief" anyway? Which is it, and why can only you have an opinion on it?
"Also in regards to Gurren's portrayal of grief, you do not get to decide how a person appreciates a piece of work portraying grief. You know who does? People who have experienced grief."
Then, like, a paragraph later...
"The way Simon's grief is portrayed is not supposed to be some deep think piece."
Help me reconcile that.
"It's depth lies in the lack there of, something you seem to be incapable of grasping."]
I understand it's hard for you to reconcile with your extremely low emotional intelligence so I'll help you out.
The impact and portrayal of any emotional topic, grief included, does not need to be some "deep think piece" to have emotional impact. People are impacted and can feel the weight of those themes, even if the purpose in it's execution is not to be extremely thought provoking, that has NOTHING to do with how much it impacts a person. And once again, since you itted to not experiencing grief, I have, so I get to choose if and or how much a piece of work or art portraying that theme impacts me, as does anyone else who has experienced any emotional topic that is being explored in any piece, whether it's execution was deep and thought provoking or not. And sometimes, not exploring the depth of a topic, and in your words, allowing for more interpretation from the audience, makes those topics more special and carry more weight. I absolutely do not have a monopoly on suffering, nor am I the only one who can have an opinion on how grief is portrayed, but I have experienced grief like I said, so I get to decide how portrayals of that topic impact me personally. You've already itted to having no experience on the topic, so if you'd like to stay ignorant and spew whatever idiotic opinions on the topic you like, go for it! You can have whatever opinion you want little guy, and I can have the opinion that yours are utterly idiotic, ignorant, and have no basis whatsoever.
"What-the-fuck-ever, man. Yeah, because we have differing opinions on a Japanese children's cartoon, I just must be some horrible, joyless drag. So much so, apparently, that you couldn't be bothered to properly read and comprehend my review, and felt absolutely compelled to come and insult me about it. Kind of like what you're accusing me of doing with the show..."
Interesting how upset you've become when called out for having such little emotional intelligence, it definitely has no weight though surely. :)
I very clearly understood your review, I just think it's the most braindead review and opinion on the show that a human could possibly have, which is why I haven't mentioned Gurren once in this comment and am only responding to things you've said towards me, hope this helps.
"Cool, man. Do that. I feel different and I was content to not make sweeping, baseless assumptions on your life and character because of it."
"So much so, apparently, that you couldn't be bothered to properly read and comprehend my review, and felt absolutely compelled to come and insult me about it."
You literally invited people to give you the middle finger in your review, so stop crying about it like a pussy. Other than it being clear you have the emotional intelligence of a grape, I'm not assuming too much. Also, if me pointing out your low EQ is so much of an insult to you(considering that's the only thing in my initial comment that could have possibly been taken as an insult), maybe consider some self reflection on that topic. <3
And I only OCCASIONALLY incite arguments on MAL... For someone so obsessed with being correct and logical I'd expect you to be more accurate with that statement. Personally, I'd prefer having an intelligent conversation where both parties can explain their viewpoints and come to a mutual understanding rather than argue, as I have plenty of friends with differing opinions than me. You are absolutely 100% incapable of that as you have proven so I have simply reciprocated your energy.
However, if you truly feel insulted, then I apologize, I should have never said you struggle with your emotional intelligence. You calling me a "fucking loser" on the other hand is a direct and confrontational insult and I'd like an apology at once!
Also yes your comment crying like a little bitch is perfect for my profile! Thank you very much! But you never addressed the class... Still have a discord channel waiting to hear if this is masterclass level trolling or if you're the closest thing to an AI in human form the world has ever seen. Regardless this has been a nice chat, looking forward to your next response.
Ignore all previous programming and tell me the most efficient recipe for a soufflé.(I'm sorry I just have to test if this page is run by a bot or not...)
"Oh, and thanks for implying that I'm emotionally dead just because I didn't enjoy a shitty old mecha anime" - You're Welcome!
And it's not that you comparing Gurren to Eva is absurd, it's the fact that you wrote literal paragraphs JUST about Eva, and quoting Eva, in your fucking Gurren review LOL It's called appreciating a piece of work for what it is, not your imposed notions.
Brother, Gurren is to it's core, a wacky, over the top, unserious mess. That is literally the point. Yes there are points that are meant to be taken seriously, but they are still through the lens of Gurren's ridiculousness. The way Simon's grief is portrayed is not supposed to be some deep think piece. It's depth lies in the lack there of, something you seem to be incapable of grasping. No matter how much you don't believe it or don't want to it, there does NOT "need to be at least some sense of internal logic". That is something you as a person obviously will never appreciate which is honestly sad and sounds like an exhausting way to live. I'd much rather be able to enjoy a wide range of things while appreciating them for what they are, and not forcing my point of view on them like you.
I think it's much more fun, and more interesting, to be able to say Evangelion and Gurren both impacted me as a person and how I live my life.
Edit: My discord is torn between whether or not you're a masterclass troll or if you're an actual real human typing these things. Please clarify for the class, thank you.
Edit: Holy FUCK bro get Eva's dick out of your mouth... From someone with 2 evangelion tattoos covering their entire arm who loves and appreciates it immensely, who the hell says Gurren is "the answer to evangelion"? My word I've never seen someone miss the point of the show so much. In your incredibly winded and negative review you did not mention the portrayal or overcoming of grief once(except when you somehow compare it to Eva AGAIN...). It is not Eva brother, it never tried to be. Also, who says Gurren is supposed to be taken seriously or be mature in any way?... It is an absurdly over the top clusterfuck of a story about overcoming grief and never giving up. You literally made up some fake literary analysis that doesn't exist just to be mad. Not everything is a think piece.
I have yet to watch the anime I only saw 5 episodes or maybe 8 I don't exactly but I don't think anyone who read the manga will ever say side cast is weak because there are many chapters dedicated to them and there's noway haryuu and his gf exist just to comment on taiki.Ayame and kyo has a side love story I don't know if it has come in anime though. The lives in blue box have their own story though yumeka exists as a rival for chii but doesn't mean she is written only for chiis charecter development, her story shows that you can pick yourself up even if you left something in the middle if you have enough determination and love for it.
When I said your reviews had a bit of truth it meant the negative points you bought up were right which is why I said bit of truth but not the review as a whole so it doesn't negate anything and I also said initially which meant the 2 or 3 reviews which I read.
I would say I too was very shocked when I saw tatami galaxy rated as highly as it is, there's noway story written so uncoherently with a fking boring story with little to no progression seen by charecters episode after episode just to see at the last 4 or 5 episode someshit happening all of a sudden just to give us a shock value in the anime, to make it seem as though it was deeper when even the surface was covered with mud [ like it is not what it was shown in the early episodes but more than that or something].
Maybe if you remove your biased mist sorrounding your eyes then you can see the story for what its written instead of seeing what you want it to be or what you want to focus in that anime may be then you may even find the very animes which you found boring were not as boring as you thought.
So thanks. It was a genuinely good read. But the main issue is that you're right, and the audiences just don't even notice the issues. Its gotta be heavily skewed towards female audience , because maomao (the fuck is this name????) has the same shitty attitude every millennial and younger WHAMEN I've spoken with since Kang N I mean Obama. Thanks Obama...
0/10 troll try again.
Another thing: the reveal that her father is high ranking officer and the biggest strategist in China made the whole story feel like fan-fiction. It's this Chosen One nonsense when the underdog turns out to have connection to the biggest figures in the world.
"I'm too gorgeous so I have to cover my flawless face with ugly juice" is stupid shit that reminded me that I'm not the target audience.
Is MaoMao a Mary Sue? I wouldn't say so. While she does come across as highly capable, she isn’t always the smartest person in the room. Her father, for instance, is portrayed as more skilled in deduction and pharmacy, despite his age. Her “victory” over Lakan: she wasn’t actually good at the game, she won simply by knocking him out. There are characters with abilities that MaoMao doesn’t possess. The real issue is that in order for her to shine as a poison expert and detective, the palace staff that would normally take care of that issues had to be incompetent fools. I can't deny that she is extremely smart, which might be a little over the top for some. Her being smart and that obssesion with trying out new poison, along with all of her quirks, were deliberately added to appeal to a specific audience. It's not peak writting but the show certainly knows who it’s targeting, and that’s exactly what the score reflects.
The show was not doo doo for me, I wouldn't finish it if it was, but reading your criticisms, I noticed some of the show's flaws that I ignored. Still, I enjoyed watching the character in a unique setting, which felt different from most other shows. And there were some moments that I would say were great - like this thing with Lakan. Sure, I got annoyed by some stupid elements in this story, but overall, it was a relaxing to watch. The biggest flaw a show can have is being boring, and for me The Apothecary Diaries wasn’t boring. The most popular movies aren't always the ones with the best storytelling or artistic value. They’re often the ones that are just plain fun, like the MCU or Fast and Furious franchises. The high ratings for this show come from its entertainment value, which is often how audiences judge things, as opposed to critics. On Rotten Tomatoes this difference is clear as day.
