That's certainly part of the appeal as well. There's a certain feeling of unease or danger to a lot of these stories that's hard to digest, but it can also make for some great drama and unorthodox characterization. I actually ordered this book the other day called Erotic Grotesque Nonsense by Miriam Rom Silverberg in hopes to get a wider perspective of ero guro as an art form and the culture behind it because I want to make a video on it some time this year.

Ero guro manga tend to be pretty short, so I would just read whatever I stumble across. A lot of these guys are insanely talented and pour a lot of emotion into their works. Suehiro Maruo would probably have to be my favorite overall though. Malice@Doll is also fantastic

I watched Midori around 4-5 years ago and thought it was beautiful. The graphic material still made me feel a bit queasy, but it was intriguing enough for me to wanna look into it deeper. I then later found out that it had this whole culture behind it and that I related to a lot of people in that sort of community, which made me respect it a lot more and eventually I grew numb to the grotesque stuff and found myself being able to fully appreciate the artistic and thematic nuances of a lot of these works.

You should! It's a great series, especially if you like a lot of mahou shoujo stuff.
