It had been a while since I watched Haibane Renmei, but from what I what I liked the most about the show is it's t very subtle and mature storytelling. I am not sure if this is a good comparison, but it is somewhat reminisce to the anime Shinseki Yori, where they has a story or message to convey but does so in a tactful manner where it doesn't hit you over the head with them. Subtlety is lacking in most media no a days and especially in anime. Most anime these days rely on quirkiness and bluntness to capture an audience attention and don't trust their audiences to understand them.

Of course there is more to Haibane appeal than being very subtle. There are the grounded, memorable characters and its insightful themes of redemption and sacrifice. But its the subtlety that I appereciate them most since finding sublety in anime is quite rare.
