At the end of the 21st century, a great catastrophe devastates Japan, leaving its land unrecognizable and halting civilization's progress. In the present day, the emperor and his four sons reign over the country with an iron fist. It is said that only the prophesied "Child of Destiny" can free Japan from the royal family's shackles.

Sarasa is the twin sister of Tatara, the Child of Destiny. Despite having to live in her brother's shadow, Sarasa s him in any way she can. However, tragedy strikes when the Red King, the emperor's youngest son, and his army attack her village, leading to Tatara's brutal death. To protect the townspeople, Sarasa takes on her brother's name and becomes the Child of Destiny, vowing revenge on the Red King.

With the sudden turn of events taking a toll on her health, Sarasa visits a hot spring to recuperate. During her stay, she meets Shuri, a charming yet mysterious young man. Shuri is fascinated by Sarasa as she treats him differently from other girls; meanwhile, Sarasa is unable to stop thinking about him. This casual encounter between the two seals their fate—destined to be bound by war, hatred, and love.

Basara is a roller-coaster from start to finish. I'm actually shocked that they never made a full anime adaptation of this series, because it was very popular in Japan and it has broad appeal. There's slowburn romance, an ensemble cast, fantasy worldbuilding, war, politics, and it can get dark and light hearted at times. It has a strong female protagonist that isn't a shallow girlboss, and the themes are relevant to current events today. I think if this series had a good remake, and was marketed properly, it could be a big thing. It stands the test of time. ...

I had a great time reading this. It ended up being my 3rd favourite manga I’ve read after Yokohama Kaidaishi Kikou, and Hunter x Hunter. Some thoughts:

1. I was surprised at how intricate the world building was. First off, I loved the desert settings throughout the manga. I have a certain attachment to the desert and its iconography due to my background. I’d go as far to say it’s a good manga for someone who’s interested in a middle eastern/Arabian themed manga.

2. I also learned a lot about Japan. As I was reading I would frequently be on Google maps looking up cities in ...

Mixed Feelings
Art: 7/10. The art is definitely that 90s shoujo vibe. If you like Fushigi Yugi, Red River, etc type art, you will like this one as well.

Characters: 2/10. I could not stand the FL in this one. At some points during reading, I kept hoping the author would remove the female lead and introduce a new likeable one. 90s shoujo manga tend to write the most aggravaging, annoying, headache-inducing female leads in the world of fiction. Honestly, I found most of the characters to be annoying.

Plot: 7/10. I will say the political aspect of the story was done quite well. Honestly it was ...
