Beneath valleys that lie near a glacier, a small kingdom struggles to survive. The kingdom contains many residents who live alongside herds of red elk, but the land and its produce barely sustain the population. Despite their state of poverty, the people dedicate themselves to their work, and they have come to with their modest condition. But Shuna, the country's young prince, is unwilling to accept this situation.

After receiving mysterious grain seeds from a dying traveler, Shuna sets out on a quest for the land of golden grain to change the fate of his kingdom. Along his journey, he discovers strange places and hears many unsettling rumors about his destination. Shuna witnesses the horrifying realities of human slavery: he encounters two young girls, Thea and her younger sister, who have been taken into captivity. Facing a new dilemma while determining the golden grain's whereabouts, Shuna resolves to still achieve his goal.

Shuna no Tabi is a loose adaptation of the Tibetan folktale The Prince Who Turned into a Dog. Using watercolor spreads instead of small s, the manga is closer to the format of a Japanese illustrated story called emonogatari. Hayao Miyazaki originally intended to create an animated film adaptation, but he felt the manga's themes would not be popular in Japan. Encouraged by the publisher Tokuma Shoten, however, Miyazaki resolved to shape this story into a different kind of visual product.

A radio drama adaptation of Shuna no Tabi broadcasted on NHK FM Japan on May 2, 1987. The manga was published in English as Shuna's Journey by First Second Books on November 1, 2022. The English publication was nominated for the 2023 Eisner Awards in the Best US Edition of International Material—Asia category.

at first when i saw the title shuna no tabi i though that it was going to be a boring story, but when i read miyazaki i knew that this is gonna be something. so i read it.

basically it would take 30 minutes to 1 hour to finish this manga. it is short and nice. i recommend you to read it, it was amusing.

the manga is colored in a nice way, the characters look good.
you won't fund too many dialogues there, its just little description about the characters actions.

overall, just go and read it, you won't loose anything at all!

I never knew that Miyazaki did any mangas--before I read this, his name was synonymous with anime movies such as Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. I was interested to read this, because I read that it was done before many of his other works. I began to read Shuna no Tabi with the hopes that it would be as wonderful as Miyazaki's later works.

I was not disappointed! The art is done in the beautiful, typical Miyazaki style--even fully colored! The art was stunning. I can't imagine how much time he must have put into each . The character ...

"Once upon the time was a tiny kingdom..."

Miyazaki-sensei, what else should I write? This manga is based on old tibetanian tale. It's tipical Miyazaki's work - a beautifull fairytale (this english word is not as good as polish Baśń or german Kunstmärchen) - story about the most importants values and power of friendship.

The Miyazaki-fans could find here some similarities to Nausicaa.

It's definetly not a work for those who don't like Miyazaki.

Finaly Miyazaki wrote in Post Script: "My only dream was tomakethis animation, but in modern Japan a simple story like this would not , at all" I think not only in Japan...

Now, you now what ...
