The Marshal King is a fresh, still-early series that doesn’t try to overcomplicate itself and ends up being better for it. It’s got a pretty straightforward premise, something that doesn’t try to be deep or overly ambitious, but instead leans into the fun of the journey and the energy of its world. And honestly, that works. It’s not the kind of manga that’s setting itself up to be some multi-layered epic, but it never really needs to be.

The main character is overpowered, and that trope, when done right, can carry a series with pure charisma and hype, and so far, this one gets it. ... There’s something satisfying about watching a powerful protagonist just exist in a world that’s trying to catch up, and it’s backed by a steampunk setting that’s visually and conceptually cool. The power system hasn’t been fully explored yet, but the setup is interesting enough to be worth watching unfold.

The side cast is still early in development and hasn’t stood out much yet, but it’s the kind of start that feels familiar if you’ve read Boichi’s other stuff, especially Dr. Stone or Sun-Ken Rock. What really stands out, though, is the art. Boichi’s style has always been something I really enjoy, and this one doesn’t disappoint either. The use of color here is also surprisingly bold. It’s not just a one-off for the opening chapters, but something that looks like it’ll stay, and it gives the manga a unique, polished look that makes the world pop even more.

At this point, it’s mostly just fun. Not something that's reinventing the wheel or trying to say something deep, but a cool, well-drawn ride that has potential if it plays its cards right. I’ll definitely be keeping up with it.

OK, plot-wise it's a trainwreck and it doesn't really make any sense. The plot twists are forced and just there for the schock value, the characters are extremely over the top. In the beginning, it started out as a very good looking steampunk western, with a very nice atmosphere, but pretty soon it slipped into something I can't even describe in words. In short, classic Boichi. The plot is sub-par, but it's so cool and it looks so cool (the author's art style is one of the most unique and the best looking in the whole manga business) that you just want to read it. ... Despite all the (significant) flaws, I'm enjoying it.
