"Can't judge people by their looks". That line, or at least its translation, appears in the fifth chapter when two delinquent-looking high school girls turn out to be really good at pasting screen tones...whatever the hell that is. Apparently something to do with manga.

And yet, that line applies to every aspect of G Senjou Heaven's Door. Ostensibly about two high schoolers making a manga together, it's really about something else entirely. Growing up and maturing. Struggling with expectations, both from one's family and oneself. Complicated relationships and how they change over time, whether with one's father, a friend, or a love interest. About the intense ... act of artistic creation, and also decline and death. Substitute "manga" for any other endeavor, and it's also a work about the ion and devotion required to attain greatness at it.

This applies to every single one of the characters. At first glance, Machizo is a spoiled brat who hates his father and takes it out on others by being rude and cruel. But there is far more to him than that. Kumiko is the standard cold, violent, beautiful bitch so common in high school manga. But she is actually nothing of the kind. And there is more to the shy, kind Tetsuo that partners with Machizo than meets the eye, too.

I can't write too much since it would spoil the many revelations throughout the work, both of who these people really are and their relationships to one another.

I read the first 13 chapters of this manga when I was 22 and thought it was one of the most incredible works I had ever seen. Now at 31, I went ahead and read it through to the end, with the final 5 chapters available.

A decade older, I detected some rough edges and slightly immersion-shattering details I hadn't noticed the first time around. But as I read further, it hit all the same feelings in me it did when I was younger. The character emotions might be heightened, but they ring gorgeously, brutally true.

There is no other manga I've read like G Senjou Heaven's Door. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a mature masterpiece about life.

well im no pro at writing reviews so i gonna be to the point.

some important tags for this manga- manga authors,family issues,sex used as escapism.

this manga is about mangakas aka manga author. it depicts how they sacrifice their family relations,love,affection in exchange for chasing after their dreams of becoming a mangaka.

this manga has drama( a lot of it) ,romance,a bit action and some ecchi.

story - we have 2 main leads in this manga who in start are strangers and one of them does not like the other one eventually they become best buddies and ... chase after their dreams of becoming a mangaka.

characters - every character in this manga is unique.

enjoyment - i enjoyed it, as a manga manic i got to know a a little about how a manga is created and how industry works and how the lifes of the people involved in this are effected.ending was good.

I reading this story 3-4 years ago, and loving it. At that point it had no reviews. And the rating was also low.
Then I saw it again today.....still low rating. I cannot understand how this beautiful manga is so underrated.
I read the story again and believe me it is GOOD.

This is a coming of age story about 2 kids who want to draw manga. What makes a good mangaka? Good storywriting, drawing, and good taste. One more thing....good character. That is the theme shown here. In order to make a good manga you need to fill it with ion, which comes with ... life experiences.

Story. 8/10
The plot is relatively simple. Sakai is the son of a famous mangaka, and he feels doubtful of his own existence. He feels insignificant compared to his father. And he likes to write stories. He acts rudely towards his father, projecting his own inadequacies over him.
Later we see him grow into a much kinder and mature person.
Tetsuo’s father left his mom to pursue a career in manga. Tetsuo loves drawing manga. So now, should he keep drawing the stuff that broke his family?
His mom wants him to be a doctor.

Art. 7/10
Characters are drawn well, a more bold art style than in most manga.

Coming of age, character growth is seen here for Tetsuo, Sakai, and Kumiko. They grow from spoiled, uncertain, directionless brats to mature adults in these 18chapters.

Actually I have a BIG PROBLEM with this manga. Everyone in this story seems to devote their life to creating the perfect manga, and they prioritise that over their family and loved ones. They see drawing manga as a world saving act, as if nothing else matters. Workaholism is promoted a lot over here.
It’s like, if you are my son you’ll be a good mangaka. Both our main characters have daddy issues. They resent their fathers and want to be more like them. And in the end they almost succeed. But was it all worth it?

I really had fun reading this story. Short and deep read. It is an intense manga that shows people’s dedication to their art. The ending is good too.

I would recommend you to read this is you like a deep Dramatic coming of age stories, some romance and lots of character development. This is dialog heavy.

Not recommended if you want sweet romance, action or a light read.
