Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki are regular middle school girls with regular lives, but all that changes when they encounter Kyuubey, a cat-like magical familiar, and Homura Akemi, the new transfer student.

Kyuubey offers them a proposition: he will grant any one of their wishes and in exchange, they will each become a magical girl, gaining enough power to fulfill their dreams. However, Homura Akemi, a magical girl herself, urges them not to accept the offer, stating that everything is not what it seems.

A story of hope, despair, and friendship, Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica deals with the difficulties of being a magical girl and the price one has to pay to make a dream come true.

Lo intenté ver por primera vez hace varios meses y quizás por la calidad en la que lo encontré al inicio no me encanto después de 1 capitulo. Me lo recomendaron tanto que decidí darle otra oportunidad y no me arrepiento para nada, ambos la historia y los personajes resultaron ser mucho más complejos de lo que esperaba.

Mi unica queja real es que no logre encontrarlo en buena calidad pues no parece estar en ninguna plataforma de streaming por el momento, de hecho, casi me equivoco y veo el spin off. Fuera de eso el choque entre la temática de "Magic Girls" con el ambiente ... oscuro por colores deslavados y muchas veces ligeramente "vacío" hace que la atmosfera se sienta hasta cierto punto un poco falsa, lo cual vuelve aún más preocupante los encuentros con las brujas, sus "dimensiones" están llenas de elementos que terminan siendo una mezcla entre lo tierno y perturbador, en esos momentos el estilo de dibujo cambia totalmente a algo fuera de un anime lo cual se siente único y de nuevo, perfectamente perturbador.

Al principio no le tuve mucha fe a Madoka, y gracias a ligeros spoilers pude inferir la habilidad de Homura desde los primeros episodios, aunque creo que fuera de quitarle a mi experiencia, siento que le agrego el poder ver como todas sus decisiones y forma de actuar encajaban con mi idea de lo que seria el plot twist. Fuera de Homura, Mami me gustó muchísimo al inicio, me gusto lo mucho que es una ligera referencia a Gilgamesh (Mi personaje favorito de Fate), no solo por sus habilidades sino también por su destino, el cual claramente no me esperaba, pero fue tan buena la ejecución que no puedo odiarlo a pesar de mi cariño por el personaje

Con solo 12 capítulos creo que se puede terminar bastante rápido, la verdad si me tome mi tiempo, pero creo que fácilmente puedes ver los últimos 5 en un mismo dia. La historia agarra muchísima potencia por ahi del capítulo 3, y creo que (como yo en un inicio) si no ves al menos los primeros 3 capítulos no podrías juzgar correctamente si te va a gustar el anime o no.

Me encanto, creo que, si me lo llegaron a pintar como un "Devilman meets Magic Girls", y aunque no diria que llega a ese nivel para mi, si fue un muy bien anime.

Mixed Feelings

Even though I don't really know shit about magical girls, I watched this one because it was being hyped up so much as a "symbolic masterpiece" or whatever by the unlearned masses. I would certainly not consider it a masterpiece. Unless I was going through my emo phase. Which I am certainly not. Okay, maybe I am, but I'm unaware of it if that's the case.

If you ask me, the main thing wrong with the show is that it kept hurling tragedy after tragedy at the girls and it still expected you to feel sorry for them solely because of their gender and age. They ... did not bother to show the characters having normal interactions not addled with drama after the second episode or so, either, so I was not sad when any of them died. Even Sayaka, who was by far my favorite of the brightly color-colored anime loli scribbles. Maybe I just like sad genki girls. She's also blue, which is my favorite color.

The titular Madoka Kaname is absolutely insufferable, too. She acts (and also looks, to an extent) bizarrely young for somebody her age (with just how naive and innocent she is, I would have been under the impression that she was about 8-10, rather than 14). And yet nobody brings this up besides Homura, the emo timetraveler anime loli who probably masturbates to the idea of Madoka being the victim of a sex crime. I was also somewhat enraged that her magical girl outfit barely showed up despite it being featured so much in promotional material, but I think that's a pretty petty thing to be angry about.

That being said, I did like the visuals and music a lot! The witch labyrinths in particular are great, albeit a bit hard on the eyes. Somehow, the animation still holds up very well to this day, even if the girls look pretty derpy from far away in the TV version.

Needlessly long TL/DR: It's best described as "Kamen Rider Ryuki in skirts" (it's not the same thing, but the similarities are definitely there. Shinji and Madoka would get along well, with how oddly innocent and childlike they are for somebody their age. The main difference is that Shinji is an actually good and likeable character and Madoka isn't). If characters are very important to you, I would most likely not recommend Madoka. If you want cool animation and character designs, I would very much recommend Madoka.

Review: Puella Magi Madoka Magica – A Magical Girl Show That Will Absolutely Shatter Your Soul (and Sanity)

When I first heard about Puella Magi Madoka Magica, I thought, “Oh, cute! Magical girls fighting evil, friendship, sparkles, the usual fluff. Let’s give it a go.” What I didn’t expect was an emotional sledgehammer to the face, served with a side of trauma-flavored visual kaleidoscope and existential dread soup.

Let’s start with the fights. And I use the word “fights” loosely, because what actually happens on screen is like someone ripped apart a scrapbook from a possessed kindergarten art class and turned it into a boss battle. The ... backgrounds? Cutout cardboard textures. Doodles with googly eyes. Victorian puppets that make you question whether you’re watching anime or having a full-blown waking hallucination. It's like the animators dropped acid, watched The Yellow Submarine, and then decided to terrify a generation.

The aesthetic of those battle scenes genuinely reminds me of that South Park episode where Stan’s grandpa locks him and the boys in a closet, blasts Enya’s Sail Away, and says, “This is what it feels like to be old and hallucinating all the time.” THAT is exactly what Madoka Magica looks and feels like during the witch sequences. I felt like I was on a spiritual vision quest I never asked for.

Now let’s talk about the tone. This show starts all sunshine and rainbows but quickly drops into total despair. It's like someone handed you a cupcake with razor blades in it. I only watched the first season, and I’m legit terrified of the rest. There’s movies. Sequels. Spinoffs. Alternate timelines. And every single one promises to drag you deeper into the abyss like a pastel-painted Dante’s Inferno. I already need therapy from the original—there’s no way I’m g up for more. I’ve already lost a therapist just trying to explain this show to him. He left mid-session. He will be missed.

And who is this show even for? It looks like it’s aimed at twelve-year-old girls, but then you get slapped with betrayal, death, timelines collapsing, and the psychological equivalent of falling down a bottomless pit made of glitter and tears. I’m convinced the creators aimed it at people who thought Evangelion wasn’t quite traumatic enough.

And just when I thought I’d recovered, I stumbled across Six Hearts Princess—a series that took everything Madoka did and cranked it up to “David Lynch at Burning Man.” If Madoka was a fever dream, 6HP was a full-on shroom-induced astral projection into the Magical Girl Twilight Zone, complete with furries wearing wolf suits and their heads sticking out their own necks like some unholy rebirth scene.

Final Thoughts:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica will mess you up. Six Hearts Princess will finish the job. Together, they are the peanut butter and jelly of magical girl-induced psychological breakdowns. If you value your mental health, maybe stick with Cardcaptor Sakura and call it a day.
