Versailles no Bara (Movie)

Hoping to unite their countries with an alliance, The Empress of Austria arranges her daughter, the delightful yet spoiled Marie Antoinette, to marry the crown prince of , Louis XVI. Upon arriving in Versailles, the Austrian princess meets Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, Captain of the Royal Guards—a seemingly dashing young man—but to Antoinette's astonishment, he is in fact a woman!

The youngest daughter of a noble family with a prominent lack of a male heir, Oscar was raised as a boy to continue the family's military legacy. Suffocated by the rigid rules associated with her new position and longing for companionship, Antoinette immediately takes a liking to this intriguing young woman, and wastes no time befriending her. However, as the childish new queen foolishly abuses her power, Oscar is conflicted between maintaining her loyalty to the royal family and addressing the growing concern of poverty among the common people.

Recalling the events of the French Revolution, Versailles no Bara depicts the struggles of two women unjustly burdened by family expectations. Yet, despite being forced to deny their identities at the expense of personal happiness, they march on to become key players in the annals of history.

Who doesn't know about The Rose of Versaille? The art style and time period in which it was written turned me off from a modern standpoint, so I never pursued it until I saw it was a MAPPA studio movie.

It takes a lot of time/energy to commit to a long, historical drama like The Rose of Versailles. I think making the story artistic and skimming over some of the story elements, while hitting the important beats, made it more accessible. If you're not new to shojo, then you're likely familiar with a lot of its tropes. I appreciated that the musical segments hinted at ... those trials and tribulations without requiring me to slog through them. It's easy to fill in the blanks and still feel the emotional struggles of the protagonists. It was very true to its shojo roots.

Now, all that said, knowing what's coming in the story, I might be more likely to pick up the original manga/anime and enjoy it. Heck, this movie makes it easier to see what parts I might want to skip to get to other, more important character arcs. I definitely recommend it to someone who'd like an introduction to the Rose of Versailles, and as a visual feast and tribute to a longstanding, influential story.

Mixed Feelings

Having watched the original series, which I think hasn't aged particularly well and was definitely in need of a remake, so I was initially excited when MAPPA first announced they were going to remake it. Because this classic story in modern visuals would have been amazing, and it was indeed amazing to see it in good visuals.

But I think that turning into a musical wasn't really a good choice, like, a lot of key moments of the story just went by during songs, which made this movie has a lot less of the impact which the original series had. Of course, this kind of thing ... was bound to happen when you're compressing a 40-episode series into a 2-hour film. (They even straight up cut some of my favorite scenes 😔)

So, yeah. It wasn't that good of a remake and the best approach would've been a proper 2-cour anime remake with a pacing that respects both the original material and the attention span of modern viewers.

This is a timeless story and it deserved more than just a flashy repackage, maybe in future? One can hope.

Well-written

The Rose of Versailles is one of the greatest anime ever made.
The Rose of Versailles (Movie) is not.

This is a glorified recap movie with a new code of paint. The movie tells, or tries to anyway, the full story of The Rose of Versailles, but in less than two hours. What this results in is a movie going through some of the more important plot points traditionally, with everything in between being either cut, or truncated into short musical montages. With so much being cut, the characters are left as hollow husks of their formerly depicted selves, and some scenes genuinely baffled me as ... to how they expected someone not familiar with the material to understand the character motivations therein.

A lot of people I've noticed call this a musical, I'd have to disagree. With a musical it is expected that the musical scenes tell the story, explore characters and just fit into the picture. In this movie the musical scenes perform almost exclusively to skip the story. They're also not performed by the characters as is typical of a musical, rather they're just recap segments placed over shitty modern pop music. There is one true musical scene in the film, a scene where a character bursts into song to directly address other characters. Just this one though, ultimately just made me wonder, why?

Had the movie told a smaller part of the story, or completely rewrote it to properly fit into a 2 hour run time, it probably could've been pretty good. But as it stands, it's no more than a recap. This is the equivalent of watching, for example One Piece, exclusively though the opening title sequences and episode previews. Miserable.

A movie that well and truly should not have been made.
