Tokyo Revengers

Takemichi Hanagaki's second year of middle school was the highest point in his life. He had respect, a gang of friends he could count on, and even a girlfriend. But that was twelve years ago. Today, he's a nobody: a washed-up nonentity made fun of by children and always forced to apologize to his younger boss. A sudden news report on the Tokyo Manji Gang's cruel murder of the only girlfriend he ever had alongside her brother only adds insult to injury. Half a second before a train ends his pitiful life for good, Takemichi flashes back to that same day 12 years ago, when he was still dating Hinata Tachibana.

After being forced to relive the very same day that began his downward spiral, Takemichi meets Hinata's younger brother. Without thinking, he its to his seeming death before flashing back to the past. Takemichi urges him to protect his sister before inexplicably returning to the future. Miraculously, he is not dead. Stranger still, the future has changed. It seems as though Takemichi can alter the flow of time. Given the chance to prevent his ex-girlfriend's tragic death at the hands of the Tokyo Manji Gang, Takemichi decides to fly through time to change the course of the future.

Things we do for love ➿ Over and over again. °7.9° °Excellent° S1🔍

Hinata is dead. The gangs killed her. Hanagaki Takemichi hasn't thought about Hina in a long time. It's 2017, but he still loves her. He can't believe she's dead. Going out with her was the best time of his life. He thought he would be successful, but it's only been a string of part-time jobs for him. The day after Hina died, someone pushes him in front of a train. As he's hit everything goes black. Then he wakes up 12 years earlier. It's 2005. Hina is alive. Maybe he can save her. ... Maybe he can reset his life. He'll need help. The smartest person he knows is Hina's brother, Naoto. Naoto is able to figure out that when he and Takemichi touch hands, Takemichi will travel back and forth between 2005 and 2017.

TR will follow Takemichi back and forth as he tries to tweak the past to fix the present. He has to tweak the gangs to do that. This is no small task. Tokyo Manji Gang (Toman) and gang Moebius are gearing up for full-out war. Mikey's #1 guy, Draken, will be / was killed by Moebius, and Mikey, head of the Toman, was never sane again. The more involved Takemichi becomes, the more he learns of past and ongoing offenses that have, nearly irrevocably, created bad blood between these factions. Takemichi ends up in the middle of it all.

TR grew on me slowly. I was picking off an episode at a time with hope of what the rating promised. It wasn't until ep7 or 8 that it started getting really good. It didn't disappoint.

We'll see a gorgeous 1st kiss in the rain. The droplets slow to the point where they appear like suspended diamonds, catching the scattered lights of the night, the reflections mystically glowing. It's beautiful art. I didn't realize anime could deliver a moment like this one. I've clearly only cut through the 1st layer of the anime onion.

"Fighting is hard work isn't it?" TR follows gangs. Some are worse than others, but they all live with violence. Each one thinks they'll be the one to make it work. I'll offer this PSA. I've heard from a corrections officer about riot films they make trainees watch. They had to watch video af a fight in which one inmate stabbed another one 400 times. The attacker actually took breaks and then resumed the attack. People are horrifyingly violent and terrifying. Even Mike Tyson needed protection in jail. Don't think you can invite trouble or ramp up an argument on the street and survive. Walk away. Don't go to jail. Live.

Anyway, learn to relax and breathe deep when you're watching Asian programming. They can extend out a crucial moment like it's in super slow-mo - like the last 2 minutes of a football game in which both teams still have all of their timeouts. Your heart could be pounding in your chest as it occurs to you that, by the time they react, it's going to be too late. Someone will be swinging the knife and the soon-to-be-victim will take a literal 4 seconds to decide what to do. I held my breath in episode 10 till I nearly ed out.

Towards the close of S1 Takemichi is truly heroic. He changes something for the better. He also garners some respect in gangland - /him/, a complete nerd. Immediately, his head gets overblown and he becomes an insufferable egotist. He goes to the hospital to see Draken and gets a verbal lashing. Then he is crushed. Dejectedly, he points out that Draken already agreed that Takemichi saved his life. "Are you taking that back? Does it mean so little? I've been in the shadows my whole life, can I get a little recognition?" The noble Draken then makes him feel much worse. He presents him with a reward that is irreplaceable and inspiring: Draken bows to him and thanks him again. The scene is truly superb. The show's rating is justified.

At the end of S1, the problems are multiplying, the solutions are few, and Takemichi's gang-banging days are far from over. Hina is adorable. She's worth the effort. When I watched TR, S2 & 3 weren't available yet. I'll be riding shotgun with the gang again before long to find out how much Takemichi can accomplish. It doesn't look like 2017 will ever look the same to him again.

Tokyo Revengers – A High-Energy Ride Through Time, But Lacking Emotional Depth

Tokyo Revengers brings together the intriguing elements of time travel, gang warfare, and teenage drama to create a show that’s both fast-paced and emotionally driven. The story follows Takemichi Hanagaki, a 26-year-old man who travels back in time to his middle school days, aiming to prevent the tragic deaths of his former girlfriend, Hinata, and her brother, Naoto, who were killed by a dangerous gang. To change the future, Takemichi becomes involved ... with the gang and strives to alter the course of events.
While the concept itself is fascinating and the series offers some high-stakes moments, the show struggles with pacing issues, inconsistent character development, and a reliance on melodrama that sometimes diminishes its emotional impact. Overall, Tokyo Revengers is an engaging watch, but it doesn’t quite hit all the emotional beats it aims for.

Story: Time Travel with a Gang Twist, But Lacking Consistency
The premise of Tokyo Revengers is one that immediately grabs attention: time travel mixed with gang conflicts. The show’s central idea of a man being able to go back in time to prevent his loved ones’ deaths is filled with emotional stakes and offers plenty of opportunities for suspense and tension. Takemichi’s struggle to balance his role as an adult with his teenage self in the past creates a unique dynamic, as he must navigate the complicated world of middle school gang warfare.
However, as exciting as the concept is, the execution can sometimes be uneven. The show’s reliance on episodic storytelling, where each episode focuses on a different gang confrontation or time-travel event, can make the pacing feel slow and repetitive at times. There are multiple instances where the series doesn’t always make the most out of its high-stakes plot, and the constant back-and-forth between timelines doesn’t always feel fluid.
The tension is often built up effectively, but the resolution of certain arcs can feel a bit rushed or lack the emotional depth necessary to make the outcomes truly impactful. Characters: Potential, But Lacking Depth
The characters in Tokyo Revengers are undoubtedly one of the series' strengths, but they also highlight some of its weaknesses. Takemichi is a relatable protagonist who starts as a weak, down-on-his-luck man but grows as he steps into his role of trying to change the past. While his emotional journey is solid, he can come across as overly reactive or ive in some instances, which may frustrate viewers who prefer more active protagonists. His internal struggles often feel repetitive, and his transformation from a coward to someone who steps up to confront danger isn’t as dynamic as it could be.
Hinata is a key figure in the story and Takemichi’s motivation for traveling back in time, but she doesn’t receive enough character development. She mostly serves as a plot device, which makes her presence feel a little shallow, despite the importance of her role in Takemichi’s journey.
Draken and Mikey, two of the main gang leaders, provide strong ing roles and show more emotional depth, especially as the show reveals more about their backstories and inner struggles. They help carry the show’s emotional weight, but they, too, don’t always get the attention they deserve, and some of their emotional developments are glossed over too quickly.
The ing cast of gang , friends, and rivals offer some interesting dynamics, but a lot of them feel like archetypes or plot devices rather than fully realized individuals. The gang conflict and the youthful rebellion themes have potential, but they don’t always resonate with the emotional depth that the show is aiming for.

Pacing: Action-Packed, But Sometimes Too Slow
One of the main issues with Tokyo Revengers is its pacing. The show can go from intense, high-stakes moments to slow, somewhat filler episodes that don’t move the main story forward. Takemichi’s attempts to change the future are often interrupted by side plots, and while these side stories help build the world, they sometimes feel like distractions.
The episodic format that focuses on different gang conflicts gives the series a sense of variety, but the repetitive nature of these episodes can make the show feel slow and drawn out. There are also moments where the story tries to inject emotional scenes, but the buildup is lacking, and the payoff isn’t as satisfying as it should be.
That said, the action scenes are well-choreographed, and the stakes feel high during key moments. When the story does focus on Takemichi’s mission and the consequences of his actions, the pacing picks up and keeps you hooked. However, those moments can be few and far between.

Animation & Art: Stylish, But Not Revolutionary
The animation in Tokyo Revengers is solid but not remarkable. The character designs are distinct and capture the punk aesthetic of the gang culture well, but the animation doesn’t stand out in a way that would make it a visual masterpiece. The fight sequences are fluid enough to be enjoyable, but they aren’t particularly dynamic or breathtaking.
The background art and setting designs are effective in establishing the gritty, urban atmosphere of the Tokyo gang scene, but the visuals can feel somewhat standard for a show in this genre. There’s nothing particularly groundbreaking in of animation quality, but it gets the job done.

Soundtrack & Voice Acting: Effective, But Not Iconic
The soundtrack in Tokyo Revengers is mostly background music that complements the action and tense moments, but it doesn’t leave a lasting impression. The music builds a sense of urgency and tension, but it’s not particularly memorable or standout. The opening and ending themes are decent but don’t have the same impact as some of the more iconic anime tracks.
The voice acting, on the other hand, is strong. Takemichi’s voice actor does a great job of conveying the character’s emotional highs and lows, and Draken and Mikey’s voices help bring the characters to life with just the right mix of intensity and vulnerability. The cast does an overall great job of making the characters believable, even if the writing sometimes doesn’t give them as much depth as they deserve.

Why It’s a 7/10
Inconsistent Pacing: The show’s pacing fluctuates between exciting and slow, with a lot of filler episodes that don’t advance the plot significantly. The buildup often leads to unsatisfying resolutions or repetitive arcs.
Underdeveloped Characters: While Takemichi and some of the ing characters have potential, they don’t always get the development they need to be fully compelling. Many characters feel like plot devices rather than real, fleshed-out individuals.
Lack of Emotional Impact: The show aims for emotional depth but often fails to deliver. The stakes feel high, but the emotional payoff doesn’t always resonate as strongly as it should.

Final Verdict: 7/10 – A Fun, But Flawed Ride Through Time and Gangs
Tokyo Revengers Season 1 is an action-packed series with a compelling premise and an engaging world, but it’s held back by inconsistent pacing and underdeveloped characters. The time travel element and gang conflicts offer plenty of intrigue, but the show struggles to deliver the emotional depth it promises. While it’s an enjoyable watch with high-energy moments, the lack of meaningful character growth and uneven narrative structure prevent it from reaching its full potential.

I really wanted to like this show. The plot is interesting - an MC with the ability to go to the past and change the tragedies in his life. Of course we knew it wasn't going to be easy, but GOOD LORD we didn't know it was because Takemichi, the MC, was incredibly incompetent and irritating. He's supposedly an adult in a teenage body and is the most immature character I've ever seen. In no way he is one of the characters that moves the story forward. He depends on everyone around him - not in a good friendship-is-all-you-need way, but as a he-cannot-do-anything-on-his-own that ... doesn't involve crying and screaming. He reminded me a bit of Natsuki in ReZero (in the 1st season), but at least Natsuki had a redemption arc and did grow from his mistakes and became a more developed character. It seemed like Takemichi did not learn anything and actually kept making the same mistakes, which we can only take so much as an audience. I was able to finish the first season and was left disappointed, to say the least.
