Kimetsu no Yaiba Movie: Mugen Ressha-hen

After a string of mysterious disappearances begin to plague a train, the Demon Slayer Corps' multiple attempts to remedy the problem prove fruitless. To prevent further casualties, the Flame Pillar, Kyoujurou Rengoku, takes it upon himself to eliminate the threat. Accompanying him are some of the Corps' most promising new blood: Tanjirou Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Inosuke Hashibira, who all hope to witness the fiery feats of this model demon slayer firsthand.

Unbeknownst to them, the demonic forces responsible for the disappearances have already put their sinister plan in motion. Under this demonic presence, the group must muster every ounce of their willpower and draw their swords to save all two hundred engers onboard. As things begin to spiral out of control, Tanjirou's resolve and commitment to duty are put to the test.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when a whole movie was dedicated to a single arc, but wow—Mugen Train completely shattered my expectations.

Right from the first frame, the animation felt like a full-blown cinematic experience. Ufotable didn’t just deliver quality—they pushed it to a level where every flame, every slash, every tear looked alive. Watching it in a theater was honestly one of the best anime viewing experiences I’ve had.

What stood out most for me was how they balanced intense action with emotional weight. The story flow was tight, no filler, no wasted moments. And as someone who’s big on character depth, I really appreciated ... how they gave time to explore Rengoku’s backstory and personality. It made everything hit so much harder.

The fight scenes, especially near the end, were jaw-dropping. Every move had weight. And the OST? Absolute chills. The music carried so much of the emotion—it just elevated everything.

It’s the kind of film that lingers with you after the credits roll.

Mixed Feelings

The three-act structure: Am I joke to you?

It was a fun, stress-free ride. Excellent art and animation, as usual with Ufotable, the action is also on top, so relaxing while watching is the most it.

But there are several problems. Due to the fact that the film is absolutely not self-sufficient and there are almost no global events, if you skip it and go straight to the second season, then you will literally lose nothing. Because at the beginning of the second season, they quickly explain all the main events.

But I would rather recommend than not, mostly just because of the animation, ... the story is weak.
The main villain is annoying by the way, and the subconscious of the characters was a little disappointing, because I wanted something more interesting.

Mugen Ressha-hen easily possesses some of the worst storytelling mechanics anime has to offer, and the film itself is something of a trainwreck; no pun intended. The first act's inability to develop a sense of urgency derails the entire screenplay's direction and eventually its emotional impact. Sotozaki's oppressive approach to exposition, in addition to the overuse of gag expressions, doesn't serve as an inciting set-up for what's to come. Tanjiro's narration single-handedly ruins suspense, repetitive, and a massive plod in the middle of action sequences. In Enmu's final bit of inner monologue, he recognizes the slayers' skills, one instance of overdramatic dialogue. A derivative cast ... certainly contributes to forgettable experiences, although they are very much in character. Their personalities don't carry over to the big screen well, especially not for newcomers unaware of typical cliches in this demographic.

It's painfully obvious that this arc isn't exactly formatted for a feature, evident from the secondary antagonist's influence or lack thereof on the original conflict. His presence is considerably weaker since he's largely an attraction in the closing act, more so an issue because it's a film. Neither villains are actual individuals beyond being demons, likely a way to subvert our attention toward the dreamscape environments. That concept itself would've been a clever backstory reveal for Rengoku had it been solely a misleading dream, and elements of subconscious manipulation are far out of this screenplay's scope. Among these dreams, comic relief is misplaced, a missed opportunity for character-building. The final message is an overlong stretch of pathos that doesn't result from tragic tones, closer to the atmosphere of a train ride, exhaustingly dull.

Production is the area one would expect substantial effort, clearly a false assumption of mine. It's actually noticeably weaker in quality compared to the TV series, in of consistency at least. Abysmal CGI rendering is a disappointing downgrade for this studio, not just the mid-section either, but conspicuous 3D backgrounds throughout. Poor 2D blending in these settings massively harms immersion, inexcusable for an adaptation of this magnitude. The audio direction is subpar as well, possibly ill-implemented with redundant timing. Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Ressha-hen fumbles its already drab material and feels like a pointless exercise in righteous pride.
