FLCL

Naota Nandaba is an ordinary sixth grader living in a city where nothing amazing ever seems to happen. After his brother Tasuku leaves town to play baseball in America, Naota takes it upon himself to look after everything Tasuku left behind—from his top bunk bed to his ex-girlfriend Mamimi Samejima, who hasn't stopped clinging to Naota since Tasuku left.

Little does Naota know, however, that his mundane existence is on the verge of being changed forever: enter Haruko Haruhara, a Vespa-riding, bass guitar-wielding, pink-haired psychopath whose first encounter with Naota leaves him with tire tracks on his back and a giant horn on his head. Though all he wants is some peace and quiet, when Haruko takes up residence at his parents' home, Naota finds himself dragged into the heart of the greatest battle for supremacy that Earth—and quite possibly the entire universe—has ever seen.

If i ever have to compare a animated show with art, flcl would be the first in my mind.
No, seriously i have not seen a anime that can be so chaotic, abstract and quite frankly stupid and also be meaningful and have layers to its story that you slowly peel like tangerines if you end up liking the energy this show has in abundance.
Of course its not without criticism, like i said it will be stupid , abstract, annoying, its a show that almost makes fun of itself and presents in such enjoyable way that never do you find yourself yearning for joy. This anime ... is almost a travesty of a sci-fi, only if it was a sci-fi because its too stupid for that.
Flcl's biggest quality lies in its themes. Themes you say what are those?.
Its in fact a coming of age story, its themes of sexual awakening, love, loss, and finding yourself in a hunt to justify your reason to breathe. Its all stupidly ingenious.
Haruko's character is one of the most unique female characters i have come across in anime. She is entertaining, but do not mistake her for good , she is just as deceptive. Her motives, desires keeps you wondering her next ludicrous action.
Naota's growth as a character, to finally understand himself and others to some extent and differentiate things is great as well but i wont be joking if i say for me among all characters its Haruko that is standout.
Flcl deals with all its themes in a soulful way, it expresses itself like no other anime and that what sets it apart from all other coming of age stories. Its abstract, and almost nonsensical just how the phase of puberty is. Its chaotic and absurd just how that phase feels deep within with thoughts swirling at a speed of light almost.
Flcl is a art, and not everyone can understand it. Whats one mans trash is others treasure. subjectivity is something that applies every where at least as long as entertainment is concerned. People who like a more linear and structured story with more dignified structure wont like it. To appreciate flcl you need to be stupid, open to a bit of chaos and a parodic show that may have some brilliance underneath it.
Lastly, read this with a grain of salt because again what i like may also be something you despise. And with a show like flcl that may just be the case.

Mixed Feelings

FLCL, also known as ‘Fooly Cooly’ or ‘Furi-Kuri’, is about a sixth grader who lives in a town where nothing interesting ever seems to happen. That is until a vespa riding, bass playing, maniacal psychopath shows up and flips his world around, causing strange things to grow out of his forehead uncontrollably, which then turn into sentient beings who fight to the ‘death’. Sounds pretty fucking awesome right? Right. Well, at least in my opinion. This show is perfect for people with unmedicated ADHD, and people who doom scroll on TikTok and Instagram Reels. If you’re like me, and do/have both (technically medicated but who ... the hell with ADHD actually re to take their meds?) then I think you’ll love FLCL. The plot, while it may seem hard to follow, is actually really well put together if you can understand what it’s getting at. The metaphors they use to portray adolescence, and the changes that come with growing up, are also beautifully written despite what others may say. The thing about FLCL, is that you need to have a ‘creative’ brain to really understand it. Most people can’t derive their own meanings from media, and rely on that media (or google) to spoon feed them meanings— when the whole point of FLCL is that it leaves it open to the viewer’s interpretation, on how they want to interpret it. I mean, what the hell does Fooly Cooly even mean!? That’s up to you, my precious viewer. And so are a lot of the other metaphors in the show. Like, are those things popping out of his head supposed to be boners, or pimples, or something else entirely? That’s up for you to decide. And if that sounds like your cup of tea, (and if you enjoy beautiful animation and a bangin’ soundtrack), then FLCL is for you, my friend.

Ooh... I'm NOT going to make a lot of friends with this review, but oh well! I actually watching this series as a kid. There's a lot of anime that I've watched as a kid, that don't immediate come to mind. This is one of those series, and for a good reason. I likely repressed the memory. It jogged back when I looked for more anime series to watch, and this was recommended.

From what I know, people speak highly of this series. I watching it with my brother, and it wasn't a fun time. He really ... liked it, and I really disliked it. I absolutely hated this show. The characters were unlikable. The MC's dad was a terrible guy, the depressing red haired girl, and the random new girl was just gross and weird. I hating every character, except the MC and his brother. Take in mind, I only not hating his brother because his brother wasn't on the show. This show probably has one of the most unlikable casts of all time. Seriously, how is it possible that everyone is unlikable.

And no, I don't mean that in a scumbag way. There are characters who are objectively terrible people, yet they manage to be entertaining. In a way, it feels like there's a purpose for them being unlikable. Think Helter Skelter with Lilico. Lilico's very unlikable and a terrible person, but that's the point of her character. That's what makes the story good. With this, they're unlikable personalities actively drag the story down.

I personally don't recommend this anime. It's basically "random BS go!" the anime series. And the characters aren't even likable with their randomness. They're terrible and disgusting people. I seriously couldn't stand watching this show, and I watched the entire thing because my brother really liked it. I don't know. This show just put me in a foul mood every time I had to watch it.
