Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist

Seventeen-year-old William Twining takes pride in his lineage as well as his devotion to modern science. When he learns that his family has gone bankrupt, the pompous noble is faced with the reality that he can no longer afford his tuition or the lifestyle he is accustomed to. In a desperate search for valuables in his manor, William discovers a hidden room and accidentally summons the arrogant demon Dantalion, the Grand Duke of Hell.

Apparently, Lucifer—the ruler of Hell—has fallen into a deep slumber. In his absence, only the human "Elector" has power to select a temporary successor, which is the cause of tension among demonkind. Although told that he is the direct descendant of King Solomon and has unshakable authority in the underworld, William refuses to believe it. While denying the existence of magic and the supernatural altogether, the defiant realist fails to recognize that he is at the center of the ongoing battle between Heaven and Hell.

Once again I'm left with a bunch of thoughts and unsolved mysteries.
I have stumbled upon Makai Ouji twice before deciding to watch it.
What can I say, third time is the charm.

This is one of the first anime I've watched where magic plays a big role.
I've never been much into that sort of stuff but Makai, that's a different tale.

I always go for the Shounen-Ai and things alike. Makai Ouji Was no disappointment.

The story was a bit repetitive despite there being only 12 episodes.
But personally, I don't mind that it's repetitive as long as I get to uncover more and more ... mysteries and answers along the way.
The last episode felt too hasty and in fact, there were even more mysteries popping up in the end and I won't be able to solve.

Nonetheless, I got attached to this anime quickly due to the comedy and the pupils of the school, and last but not least, the main character himself.

The past with the the main character and his name was captivating.
For the first time I felt like there was a different but very strong connection to the family generation of the main character.

The characters were unique and beautiful in their own way.
Of course I would've liked so know more about William and his ancestor.

Did I enjoy the anime? Yes I did.
Each episode lead me to watching the next one and before I knew it, it was over.

The anime could use a second season, to explain the unanswered questions that episode 12 left me.

I'd like to know if the main character forgot specific things, just like all the other pupil characters from the school did.

Overall, I give this anime 8.3
Surprisingly better than I had expected.

Mixed Feelings

Full disclosure, I am a Christian. I find the characterization of God, the religion, angels, demons, and Solomon offensive. Demons aren't sympathetic entities and angels aren't sadistic free acting monsters. If you were unsure of the writer's terminally online cringy internet atheist and/or satanist status, all doubt is cleared with the sexual tones inserted between all the characters, regardless of sex. It's your classic “free love” is a virtue and line blurring perversity. The content cobbled from pseudoepigraphical and other extrabiblical works and tales, while entertaining, are made up out of whole cloth and is grating to the religious.

With that out of the way, the ... show isn't bad. I wouldn't call it good, either. It's watchable. What I mean by that is it isn't emotionally draining to sit through like really good, but intense stories are. There aren't any serious issues with how it's presented. The flow and pacing is fine up until the end where they seemed to have rushed to slap in an ending, but that's no different from 75% of anime. (The dang episode and season format shackles, butchers and ruins so many stories.) I don't know what else to tell you. It's pretty generic. If you're religious, you may hate it. I certainly regret watching it for that reason. On the other hand, if you're secular and into “boy's love” (or is it “boys love”?) you might like it. It definitely has those uncomfortable pretty boy relationships in there. Faces two inches apart and what not.

Do you like shows with a fun story? How about shows with good art? Shows with a memorable soundtrack? Shows that do anything at all whatsoever to hold your attention?

Yes to any of these? Turn away now. This is the most milquetoast, poorly put together show I've watched in a while. I'd like to mention that apparently many important scenes/plot points from the manga have been taken out, so you're already getting a chopped up experience.

But if you aren't already warned away, let me go a little more in depth.

The two big offenders about this show? Visuals and characters. Seriously, the visuals are bad. Like, ... BAD bad. Characters are off-model more than on-model, close-ups frequently show characters with enormous noses or their eyes misplaced, the color palettes used make everything look way too shiny, and frankly, a show with such stiff animation shouldn't be trying to have action sequences. The action sequences are incredibly poor, with reused animation being a somewhat common occurrence, even in the very last episode.

The characters are much worse, however. The main character's gimmick is that he insists the supernatural don't exist. Which, this is fine and dandy, except when he's doing it constantly while staring at 50+ demons, watching inhuman creatures talk and move, etc. It's absurd and it's not even really played for laughs that much, he just constantly denies reality and substitutes his own. He is also incredibly selfish and never develops at all beyond that, making him a very frustrating character to have to put up with, especially because every other character is fawning all over him (usually for their own selfish needs). Speaking of, other characters are all one-note stereotypes, so they definitely don't develop. Their reasoning for their behavior is often incredibly shallow (when the show actually bothers explaining their reasoning, that is) and most characters seem to make decisions randomly on the fly. Another problem is that characters are always either super broken op strong or just get slapped around every time they try to do anything (even if the story claims they're strong). it does not make any interesting tension.

It's also hard to care for any of the characters due to how many there are. Later episodes just start throwing in more and more, and most of them have absolutely no personal details given about them. While a lot of the designs are unique and creative, it doesn't matter if none of them have any substance. Plus, with this only being a 12 episode series, most of them just feel shoved in to rush things along. Despite all the problems with the length and writing of the show, the creators still managed to somehow make a filler episode. I'd say it's impressive, but it's more depressing.

It's really not worth the time. If you're interested in giving it a try anyway, I'd suggest looking into the manga instead, because the anime is only really good if you need assistance with naptime.
