Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi

Kazuma Hoshino is preparing himself for a new stage of his life as a teenager. Because of his brother Ayumu's weaker than average health, their parents thought it best for the family to move out from the city to a more rural environment. Now the two brothers are off to the Yorozuyo Inn where they’ll be staying until their parents can settle affairs back in the city and set up their new home.

Their arrival to the inn doesn't go as planned though when they catch the wrong bus, wind up in the middle of nowhere, Ayumu gets his hat stolen by a wild monkey, and Kazuma gets lost in the woods trying to track the animal down. It all leads to a chance encounter with a spirited young girl named Ui, who Kazuma ends up accidentally falling onto and kissing while she tries leading him back to the bus stop. This hardly sits well with Ui’s friend Ibuki who swiftly kicks Kazuma and sends him on his way. Much to Kazuma's continued horror, his bad luck is perpetuated at the inn thanks to its landlady Senka and her slightly perverted sense of humor, and then finding out that two of his classmates are the girls he embarrassed himself in front of back in the woods!

Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi finds Kazuma adapting to his new school, dealing with the multiple women who have entered his life, providing emotional for his younger brother, and coping with living with his new landlady. However, for some reason, something about this place is bringing whispers of the past into Kazuma's mind. Small flashes back to a more innocent time and a friendship long forgotten. What could this déjà vu mean?

Every once in a while, you stumble upon some anime that, while not bringing anything new to the table, makes-up for it by executing its already tried and tested elements in such a flawlessly manner that lefts you feeling like it did. Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi was one of those such animes for me, and has left me with such a good impression I genuinly doubt many series, even those more "innovative" with its concepts will manage to live-up to.

A visual novel adaptation at its core, Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi displays many story elements, character tropes and general vibes many other visual novel adaptations feature. ... To me, at least, the similarities between this show of those IPs of the ToHeart series striked me as deeply surprising; that overall sameness going as far down as characters that be it not for their different backround and unlike design one might as well mistake them from carbon copies of each other. I guess the fact Japanese visual novels at their core are all similar to one another at their core means when they get adapted into anime these sort of things are bound to happen for their nature.

That would really be the only warning I would give to you should you start watching Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi beforehand: Should you be wanting to see something most likely you haven't seen before or are not a fan of animes that could be summarized (altough I would be a bit mean to do so) as "the same story but told with different characters" then Hoshizora might not be for you. You better look elsewhere for what you are seeking for because this series neither is even trying to deliver something new to the anime industry nor should you threat it as if it did.

But wanting something new is the not the reason one should start watching this to begin with; Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi is a very calm and gentle anime with a nice countryside athmosphere that soothes your sould one you start watching it. Its the type of series one puts on play, lays back, relaxes, and don't think too much about what you are seeign. And that, as I stated in the beginning of my review, it does magnamously.

Sure, the characters might be all tired tropes for other animes, but they are executed in such a way you kinda forget about it and simply enjoy seeign them go about their daily lives, interact with one-another, and the chemistry that begins to form along the different of the group as the "story" goes by. I put "story" between quotations mark mainly because this series takes a very episodic Slice-of-Life style towards its chapters that make it so a consistent plot is only followed during its first and last episodes the middle section of the show consisting mainly of the main cast goofing around Yamabiko and its surroundings, altough there are glimpses of a more complex story here and there scattered across the episodes, be aware of that. Rather than beign a disadvantage, I would say, that approach plays perfectly into the style of anime Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi tries going a for; an easy to diggest, heartwarming story you watch when you are feeling down or simply want to relax at the same time you don't think too much of what you are seeing at the moment.

The artsyle is cute and moe, its music is superb (the intros and outros beign particularly good at what they are doing, altough the BGMs don't stay too far behind either), and the athmospheric sounds of birds, wind and waterfalls in the backround will make you feel like you truly are in a quiet village at the foot of the Japanese Alps, or wherever in the aforementioned archipelago the series is supposed to take place, for that matter. Other than its obvious plot weaknesses (which aren't really relevant for viewers such as me) ) can't really say anything else negative about Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi. I guess this is the point of the review where I ask you to consider the series should you be liking what I have wrote until this parragraph, you should seriously consider it since it makes for a nice experience you can complete in as little of a timeframe as week depending on how many episodes you watch per day. Consider it.

Lastly but nonetheless still important to talk about; this series is quite heavy on its fanservice, and when I mean heavy I mean we get to see fully naked girls with their tits out in the open for more than one episodes. Such things for me, all the better, but I know there are some viewers out there who might feel uncomfortable when seeign those on screen, so be weary on that should you be one of those viewers and deciding if to watch this yes or no.

Also, Sakai Hina best girl, I don't care what anybody says. You should watch this just for her, haha.

Man, it's a shame the visual novel this comes from got translated from Japanese or anything, this series made me want to play it so badly... lol.

Mixed Feelings

Hoshizora is an interesting ecchi-based harem, so much so that it took two complete viewings for me to collect my thoughts. It isn't a particularly innovative series but still manages to entertain through decent character interactions and late-building tension. Despite giving very early signs of which harem girl will win Kazuma's hand, the series still puts forth a decently plausible plot line, especially compared to some of the other flops of 2012. If you're looking for a simple harem devoid of senseless action or magical elements to spend six hours on, look no further.

Animation:
Hoshizora is a fair looking series with minimal CGI elements and some ... pretty good looking water effects. It uses a pleasing color palette ranging from a slightly under-saturated base appearance to heavily-oversaturated scenes (such as sunsets). The backgrounds are also quite good; in fact they are so detailed at times that the less-detailed characters look comical when superimposed in front of the background. While lacking in details occasionally, the character styling is fairly good. All important characters are easily distinguishable, including siblings with impossibly different hair colors. My only major critique is Ui; the real world is not so forgiving to those who gorge on monster parfaits and snacks on a daily basis. The series could have also done with a better QA as there were instances of mysteriously, instantaneous costume changes.

This is a relatively calm series where the highlight in of action is a school race. There's no hint of magic (other than Ui's metabolism) in this series as well. What you will find, instead, is a fairly generous portion of ecchi panty shots and naked scenes full of god rays and mystic mist. The series' overall approach is a bit more conservative than 30-sai in of sexual references and the characters are (thankfully) a bit more mature in feel than those in R-15.

Sound:
Each episode starts with a progressive but melodically challenged OP. It starts as a calm lullaby but then evolves into a frantic-paced jpop song. I can't put my finger on it but I didn't particularly like the singer's voice. The main ED is a fast and playful work that sounds as if it served as the baseline inspiration for Nichijou's OPs. It heavily relies on synthesized sounds, which makes it blend with the BGM quite well. The 10th episode is special in that Madoka gets her own fitting ED, you can probably guess why. The BGM is unusually limited in variation so be prepared to hear the same playful synthetic songs over and over.

At the time of its release, the voice cast for this show isn't what I'd consider an all star team. While the VAs gave an adequate performance, I think the script severely limited them at times. Consider the following example from the first episode:

Kazuma (with an incredulous tone): "Hey... you're a girl?"
Ui: "Yes, I'm a girl."

I still can't quite grasp what the scriptwriter was thinking at some points. Script aside, I was also a bit annoyed at how girlish Ayumu sounded. Overall, don't expect this to match the level of drama in other shows such as Ano Hana.

Story:
Kazuma and his weak brother, Ayumu, move in with a family friend in a quiet, rural town, where the residents gloat about their convenience store that closes at 8PM. Soon, Kazuma starts bumping into girls (literally) left and right and before you know it a harem has developed.

The story is told in a slice-of-life, episodic manner with only minimal connectivity. It's a bit strange in that episodes sometimes end abruptly, not at cliffhangers but just as if the director decided to chop up one long movie into chunks. The overall pacing is a bit slow and, with the random episode transition points, the series doesn't really push you forwards.There are a handful of episodes where the ending isn't so arbitrary, specifically episodes that focus on a particular harem candidate. The story doesn't really have any rising action until the last two episodes, which builds to a predictable but satisfying climax and conclusion.

Overall, the plot is extremely predictable and closely follows established harem patterns. The majority of the involvement comes as a big lump towards the end of the show so pace accordingly. Compared to other shows in its season, the story is a bit boring and overly conservative. Luckily the characters bring a bit of life to the series.

Character:
Kazuma is your typical harem lead, a nice dude who is oblivious to girls' feelings and who blushes at anything ecchi. He somehow miraculously adapts to the slow pacing of rural life after having living the majority of his life in "the big city" and is shortly somehow surrounded by all the school's idols. The series makes use of a lot of established character patterns (useless comic-relief guy friend, a bunch of tsunderes to spice up the mix, etc.) but successfully presents them in a mostly plausible manner. Though, honestly, the bulk of the juicy, drama-filled interactions occur very late towards the end of the show. This is where you'll find some decent character development and some hard choices. If not for this last glimmer of inspired presentation (similar in feel to the better parts of Mashiro-iro Symphony), I would have called this series a flop as well.

Value:
Overall, the series had some decent comedic scenes as well as some solid development late in the season. If you can deal with some minor inconsistencies and some shamelessly haphazard episode transitions, this series is a fair watch. It treads on very safe grounds using existing cliches and harem patterns but is brave enough to at least forces a conclusion that may disappoint some fans. This is by no means an outstanding harem, but seeing how bad some of the other 2012 harems have been, it seems directors ought to be looking back in time for some much needed inspiration.

This is just so bad, no character development at all, not even the main girl, she's just straight up annoying. DO NOT even waste your time on this dogsh*t show.

Even the side characters got their own development but the main girl doesn't even have one, like the author just picked her for the heck of it.

The story is just your average WN adapted harem, it's so niche but I still gave it a chance to see if I am wrong but guess what? I'm right, this series is straight up garbozo

You will enjoy this if you like garbage story, that's for sure lol
